The rolling mountains are sculptured with tightly packed terraces on the precipitous slopes, extending for hundreds of miles. Songtsam Lodge Tacheng is located among QIBIE village and HADA village while those two villages sit on a bench terrace on the northern bank of the LAPU river’s valley. This area, richly endowed by nature, is a famous land of plenty in the northwest of Yunnan province. What’s more, this area, with abundant products, is rich in fruits and vegetables all year round. Natural conditions make Tacheng a more natural and seasonal diet. Specifically, meals of Songtsam Lodge Tacheng are cooked by local chefs, while all food ingredients are planted in the lodge’s vegetable garden or surrounding villages. In general, Songtsam Lodge Tacheng’s meals are healthy home-made style which maximizes the original flavor of ingredients.

Songtsam Lodge Shangri-la is located in XIAOJIEZI village, a Tibetan village near Songzanlin Monastery. The altitude here is 3280 meters. The land is flat, and the views are idyllic. Villagers grow barley, buckwheat, potatoes, turnips, etc. They mainly eat high-calorie-meat and cereals such as Tibetan pig, beef and mutton, Zanba, buckwheat cookies and buttered tea. Tricholoma matsutake and various wild mushrooms grow in the surrounding mountains and forests during the rainy season, which also adds a lot to the meal. By making new tastes with traditional ingredients, dishes are based on improved Tibetan meals here.

The camp is completely open-plan and flanks a mammoth waterhole which pulses with animal activity.

Recently built is a new luxury spa overlooking the waterhole. A wide choice of treatments are on offer to soothe the body, relax the mind, and indulge the senses. Two therapists are on duty at all times so that couples can enjoy their treatments in tandem. Kapama Buffalo Camp offers a unique and intimate experience in the African bush. It is ideal for discovering big game Africa in true safari tented style without compromising on comfort.

Ten luxury newly built canvas tents, each sleeping two, are set on wooden decks built on stilts over a steep-sided riverbank. Wooden walkways interconnect the rooms, which are all in the upper reaches of tall riverine trees. The river below rarely flows and antelopes are seen daily walking along the sandy riverbed. Each tented room has all the usual comforts of electricity, en-suite bathroom, safe, writing table, wardrobe, low impact climate control, mini-bar and tea/coffee facilities.

The communal areas of Buffalo Camp are on the riverbank, where gardens of succulent aloes and euphoria are tended around the thatched bar, dining room, pool terrace and campfire. But the thick African bush is just a glance away, inhabited by animals like lion, hyena and jackal whose calls can be heard in the dead of night. Lanterns, rather than electric lights, glow at night under the trees, creating a special intimate ambiance particular to Buffalo Camp.

With a maximum of 20 guests at Buffalo Camp, special attention is paid to personal service and the staff become like friends. Kapama Buffalo Camp is a truly authentic way to experience the African bush.
