Annapurna Base Camp Trekking

The Annapurna region provides you with unparalleled access to spectacular horizons of snowy peaks, so amazingly high that you can’t believe your eyes. This trek is one of the most popular in Nepal and for good reason. Annapurna Base camp is surrounded by a cirque of awe-inspiring peaks, including the awesome south face of Annapurna I (8,091m), in a natural amphitheater which is quite simply mind-blowing. As well as providing the views for which the trek is famous, the trail takes you through an ever-changing landscape of rice fields, misty forests and tiny local villages. The trek starts from Pokhara, a beautiful glacial valley in the lap of the Annapurnas, with a short drive to the trail head at Nayapul or Phedi.

From here we ascend the well-trodden trails through terraced farmland and traditional villages. As we climb through ancient oak and rhododendron forests, across sparkling streams and past waterfalls, the world of snow and ice starts to unfold above us. This combination of pretty villages and terraced fields of millet and rice, coupled by the majestic splendor of Machapuchare (6,993m), Annapurna I and Hiunchuli (6,441m) make this an extremely rewarding trek.

We ascend to Machapuchare Base Camp (3,700m) on the lateral moraine of Annapurna South glacier. The steady climb up to Annapurna Base Camp reveals the full splendor of this natural amphitheater. When we reach our destination, you will be overwhelmed by the 360 degree views of the Himalayas. We can retrace back to Pokhara or take a short diversion to Poon Hill to enjoy the views of Annapurna from a different angle.

  • Amazing views along the trek.
  • Phenomenal view of the Himalayas.
  • Experience the culture in local villages.

Day 2
Pokhara / Ghandruk (B,L,D)

(1940m/6360ft) 5-6 hours
Leave Pokhara early in the morning by bus or taxi to New Bridge or to Phedi. From Pedhi we take a steep path up the hill to our right towards Dampus. Walking along this ridge gives fantastic views of Annapurnas, Manaslu. If we go to Birethati, we turn right after crossing the river (Modi) and aim to reach Ghandruk about a 4-5 hour steep walk. Our efforts are rewarded with good views of Machhapuchre (Fishtail) and Annapurna South. We stop overnight in this pretty village.

Day 3
Ghandruk / Chomrong (B,L,D)

(2170m/7120ft) 5-6 hours
If we are on the east side of the Modi river valley the train cross the river at Nayapool (New Bridge) and climbs to Chomrong via a hot spring, which can provide a much needed rest stop. If we are on the west of the valley the trail descends to the ModiKnola and then ascends to Chomrong. There are a few water mills and other attractions which provide enjoyment along the way. Chomrong has plenty of lodging and provides good views of tomorrows walk.

Day 4
Chomrong / Bamboo (B,L,D)

(2310m/7578ft) 4-5 hours
As we leave Chomrong the trail drops down to the Chhomrongkhola, and then climbs to Dinues, Khuldighar at 2380m where there is an ACAP check post and then on to Bambu. The trail climbs through Bamboo.

Day 5
Bamboo / Deurali (B,L,D)

(3230m/10595ft) 3-4 hours
The trek remains on the west bank of Modi, now following through a more open valley and eventually emerges into the Sanctuary. Straight ahead is the high lateral moraine of the South Annapurna glacier and Modi which leads to the Machhapuchhre base camp.

Day 6
Deurali / Annapurna Base Camp (B,L,D)

(3700m/12135ft) 5-6 hours
In the morning we trek about one and half hours and then climb on to the lateral moraine and down the other side. The glacier is safe and quite easy to traverse. The British Expedition Base Camp at an elevation of 4,100m is reached after another one and half hours. The trip is best done from the lower camp and the best views are probably obtained from the crest of the moraine. Enjoy the 360 degree views of the Himalayas. We return to the Machhapuchhre Base Camp or further down to Doban for overnight.
