Myanmar

Mystery. Tradition. Spirituality. You won’t find another realm as deeply removed from modern life and yet presenting so much to discover. Drift downriver into Myanmar’s countryside, and you’ll come upon a gentle people that are at once playful, engaging and full of wonder about you. As you most certainly will be about them and their deeply held beliefs.

This is a land populated with a fantastical collection of Buddhist shrines like the immense shining dome of Shwedagon Paya or the almost supernatural Golden Rock at Mt. Kyaiktiyo – a pagoda balanced atop an immense boulder, itself covered in gold leaf. And the whole of it about to plunge from a cliff. It’s a sight designed to stir wonder and awe.

The cities, too, retain a vital connection to an emotional past and deeply held way of life. Here you will find men in sarong-like attire and operators offering you rides in traditional trishaws. Take a moment to enjoy a spot of tea at one of the numerous tea houses frequented by the populace.

Myanmar has only recently emerged from its sequestered past and today’s modern devices are slowly filtering into the country and consciousness of this nation at the crossroads of change. Still, you’ll find the countryside every bit as authentic as the traveler of one hundred years ago.

Like that traveler, you can appreciate the country at your own pace. Steam down the Irrawaddy River on a traditional cruiser, discover your perfect spot of beach on an untouched coastline or trek through forests and mingle with the locals in small villages. The discoveries and wonders are still waiting to be savored in this ancient land.
